A visit with IJM's Mumbai field office

A visit with IJM's Mumbai field office

by Valerie Tompson

Last month I had the opportunity to meet several people from the Mumbai field office of International Justice Mission (IJM). IJM’s mission is to to protect the poor from violence by rescuing victims, bringing the criminals to justice, restoring survivors to safety and strength, and helping local law enforcement build a safe future that lasts. In October, IJM hosted Liberate, which was a gathering in Dallas, Texas, where 1,000 employees from IJM from all corners of the world were in attendance as well as more than 2,000 supporters. IJM is a global mission partner of City Church, and we specifically partner with the Mumbai office. You can read about one of the Mumbai office’s recent rescues here.

Getting to personally interact with the team that we support was such a gift. While we visited, several things struck me. The field office personnel truly want this to be a partnership; they wanted to know how they could be praying for City Church. Also, in spite of dealing with extreme brokenness and darkness, which I can barely fathom, they have a positive outlook and remain encouraged and hopeful. They updated me on the enormous progress that has been made in Mumbai as far as collaborating with the government officials to end sex trafficking there. This was not the case when they started their work 18 years ago. I learned that little things mean a lot to them; personal correspondence, care packages, and birthday cards. One of the field workers said to me, sometimes we feel so alone in what we are doing, and a card reminds us that there are many praying for us and with us in our work.

I also had the opportunity to attend a gathering for all field office church partners. Hearing stores of long-term partnerships between churches and specific offices inspired me. I look forward to exploring further what this could look like for City Church. We also spent time in prayer for each office and for supporting churches. We ended the gathering by praying in what was described as the Korean way of group prayer. We all prayed at once, a cacophony of voices joined together, believing that God heard all prayers.

Please join me in supporting our IJM partners in Mumbai by praying for them. I look forward to seeing how God will use this partnership for City Church, Mumbai, International Justice Mission and ultimately his kingdom on earth.
