Pockets of Brokenness | Pictures of Beauty

Pockets of Brokenness | Pictures of Beauty

by Linc Ashby

There are pockets of brokenness all over our city, but there are also people painting pictures of beauty in these broken places. At City Church we desire to serve with ministries throughout our city who are already renewing Houston with the gospel of Jesus Christ. To that end, we have established partnerships with the following ministries because we believe they are painting beautiful pictures of grace in deep pockets of brokenness.

Low income communities are often filled with disintegrated families, who suffer more acutely from a poverty of being than a lack of material resources. The Forge for Families, Agape Development and Generation One are transforming their neighborhoods by preparing Christ-following, independent, community leaders and entire families to fulfill their God-given potential.

Houston is a major hub for human trafficking. The Landing provides a place where victims can be cared for, nurtured and encouraged.

Homelessness, hunger, a lack of adequate clothing and substance abuse are the tragic realities for many precious souls in our city. Star of Hope encourages and empowers those who are battling addiction and they provide shelter for those, who, like Jesus have no place to lay their head. Kids’ Meals and the Emergency Aid Coalition seek to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and welcome the stranger.

Work is a wonderful gift, which is why the lack of steady employment is so painful. The Work Faith Connection not only seeks to equip their clients with opportunities for future employment, but also encourage us all to see our story as part of God's larger story.

Educational inequities are more prevalent than educational options all over the city of Houston. Yellowstone Academy seeks to answer the challenge of this crisis by providing a school where every child receives an education that cultivates their intellect, nourishes their spirit and empowers them to create a fulfilling future.

Oaklawn Presbyterian Church is a bilingual sister church located in the historic 2nd Ward of Houston. Along with Cornerstone Family Ministries they provide opportunities for surrounding families to gather regularly for community, kids’ activities, educational opportunities and meals.

As we engage in gospel ministry with our partners, we can't help but become more aware of the brokenness within us. May we always posses a keen awareness of our own desperate brokenness apart from the beauty of God’s grace in our lives.

If you would like to volunteer with one of these ministry partners, please reach out to the organization’s volunteer coordinator.
